Today marks the 85th anniversary of the anti-Jewish racial laws proclaimed in Piazza Unità in 1938.
Not far from the city hall balconies and next to the column bearing a statue of Emperor Charles VI, a group gathered next to a discreet commemorative plaque this afternoon, 19 September. The words on the plaque are inscribed in Italian and Hebrew: “On September 18, 1938, Mussolini chose this square to announce the enactment of the anti-Jewish racial laws.”
Whilst today’s gathering was much smaller than 85 years ago when the piazza was filled with to the brim, Trieste’s main square still bears the weight of history that changed the course of the world, forever.
