The initiative, carried out in collaboration with BAT Italia and the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, landed in Trieste to raise awareness among citizens and local administrations on littering, as well as the abandonment of cigarette butts and small waste in the environment.

“Of the 6 trillion cigarettes smoked worldwide, 4.5 end up in the environment every year. In Italy alone there are 14 billion. Cigarette butts are the most widespread waste on beaches and among the most present in the Mediterranean, together with bottles, caps, cans and many small objects that break down and become microplastics, seriously threatening the sea and our own health. The encouraging results of our PGGC campaign demonstrate to us, once again, how important it is to invest in concrete activities to promote and raise awareness, declares Raffaella Giugni, MAREVIVO Institutional Relations Manager.
