Did you hear the motors roar this morning and was wondering what was going on? It’s the famous Trieste Opicina Race that has woken up this city this early am.

The Trieste Opicina race used to be one of the most famous uphill car races held from 1911 to 1971. It was known as “The Uphill Monza” due to the high speed that the cars reached on the winding route to the small town of Opicina.

Unfortunately, the high speed that made the race world known was the reason why the event was canceled in 1971 – cars had become too fast and the area surrounding the route had become so populated that it was no longer possible to close the road to traffic for two days of the race.

However, the race was revived as a serious competition organized by the Automobile Club Trieste in 1929 and is now of those annual events all Triestini have their eyes on.

Don’t miss this year’s historic car parade in Piazza Ponterosso, happening today, Sunday, 15 October.
