Taking to heart the lesson of the parable of the good Samaritan is the key to assisting the millions of migrants and refugees forced to travel far from their homelands and often exploited along the way, the bishop of Trieste, Trevisi said.
A new dormitory for the immigrants has been opened by the diocese of Trieste in via Sant’Anastasio. “We must help the less fortunate,” the bishop of Trieste, Monsignor Enrico Trevisi, took a stand on the hosting of refugees, in anticipation of the winter cold, in an official statement, signed together with the current director of Caritas, Don Alessandro Amodeo.
“These days – the bishop stated – there is growing apprehension and concern for all those who, unable to find accommodation, are forced to sleep outdoors. Among these, also migrants who pass through Trieste and stop even for just one night near the train station but cannot find toilets or shelter. Sometimes there are even families with children. And in any case the cold remains a problem and a danger for adults too.”
“Once again – writes Monsignor Trevisi – we turn to the institutions, appealing to that spirit of humanity that characterizes our people and our cultural and religious traditions. Despite this, we realize that in this situation we cannot stand still, in silence, helpless, with the fear that something serious could happen. As the Church of Trieste – the bishop announced – we have identified a small structure in a city parish. It’s not optimal, but it’s a shelter and that’s what we can do now.”
The dormitory in via Sant’Anastasio, right by Piazza Libertà and the train station, has twenty-four beds, with the possibility of dinner and breakfast. It will have a night reception service, from 6pm to 8am.
“We hope there’s a great feedback with many volunteers and many entities helping to keep this dormitory open every night, actively collaborating with the Caritas,” added the bishop.
