For the first time in the Italian university scene, an artist residency project is underway: the University of Trieste opens its doors to eleven artists from the contemporary scene, hosted for a week in the student residence.

The Shine Bright Like a Diamond project was presented at the headquarters of the FVG Autonomous Region in Rome in the presence of:

Roberto Di Lenarda, Rector of the University of Trieste; Anna Del Bianco, Central Director of Culture and Sport of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and General Director of ERPAC – Regional Body for Cultural Heritage; Laura Sartori, Coordinator of Centenary activities, University of Trieste; Eva Comuzzi, curator of “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” – artist residencies; Alessia Rosolen, Councilor for Work, Training, Education, Research, University and Family of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Massimiliano Fedriga, President of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The aim of the initiative, entitled #SBLAD – Shine Bright Like A Diamond, is to tell, through the artist’s gaze, the richness and complexity inherent in every discipline, the uniqueness and versatility of the human being. The heart of the project, one of the flagship initiatives of the university’s Centenary, will coincide with the week from 6 to 14 November.

The artists will have the opportunity to live in close contact with the students, teachers and researchers of the University: each of them – two artists work in pairs – will, in fact, be hosted by one of the ten Departments from which they will draw inspiration to create a work original art.

Various techniques will be used, in particular installation, but also drawing, sound design, sculpture, photography and painting.

The first contacts – a source of inspiration for the artists – took place starting from Monday 23 October with the visit of the Departments, the most representative places of the University and the meeting with those who live there every day. Already places of knowledge in themselves, the Departments will be transformed into incubators of free and shared thoughts, repositories for artistic suggestions, transversal dialogues and short circuits between disciplines. Working among and with students and teachers, young talents will be inspired by themes, research and ideas. The stimuli developed, such as the concept of care, of biodiversity, of the future of the human race, will come to life in a series of targeted works created in special spaces, the “artist’s rooms”, identified on the different levels of the staircases of the central building, a symbolic place with great visual and communicative impact.

The vernissage is scheduled for Tuesday 14 November at 6.00 pm; the exhibition will be open to visitors with free entry from 15 November until December 2024.
