The last two dates on December 5th and 17th offer the opportunity to travel aboard historic trains for pre-Christmas events. The calendar of events, promoted by Fondazione FS and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, concludes successfully with 32 historic trains running from May to December, drawing large crowds and selling out.
Trieste, December 1, 2023 – There are two more chances in December to board a historic train and attend some of the advent events in the region, such as the Krampus parade in Tarvisio and visits to nativity scenes and markets in Poffabro, Sacile, and Polcenigo. The 2023 schedule of “Historic Trains FVG” comes to an end, an initiative promoted by Fondazione FS and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in collaboration with PromoTurismoFVG. The initiative, by the numbers, has once again enjoyed wide success and favor among the public: 32 Centoporte trains operated from May to December, many of which quickly sold out, totaling over five thousand passengers. This doesn’t account for the numerous UNESCO sites, Italy’s most beautiful villages, and significant regional events related to food and wine, culture, craftsmanship, nature, sports, and historical reenactments.
The appreciation continues for the last two stops, with the first in Tarvisio already registering a sold-out status. Following the success of 2018 and 2019, this year’s initiative aimed to promote the region and its events while encouraging railway transportation for a slower and more sustainable tourism model. This is achieved through a high-quality offering, the option to bring bicycles on board, and a special fare that includes free guided tours and small tastings for passengers.
December Dates:
- On Tuesday, December 5th, the Krampus Train will depart from Trieste heading to Tarvisio during the celebration of Saint Nicholas and the traditional Krampus masquerade through the city streets. In Tarvisio, as in Carinthia and Slovenia, tradition dictates that Saint Nicholas, dressed as a bishop and accompanied by the devilish “Krampus,” goes from house to house to praise good children and admonish the mischievous ones. Meanwhile, in the town’s streets, children challenge the demons with snowballs and firecrackers.
- On Sunday, December 17th, the Nativity Scenes and Christmas Markets Train will connect Gemona del Friuli to Poffabro, Polcenigo, and Sacile, a three-stage journey along the historic Pedemontana railway. Explore the three small villages, visit typical nativity scenes, and markets. Upon reaching Sacile, travelers can immerse themselves in the Christmas Village and enjoy free visits to Palazzo Ragazzoni.
Tickets are available through all Trenitalia channels: www.trenitalia.com, station ticket offices, self-service kiosks, and authorized travel agencies. During train journeys, the Museo Stazione Trieste Campo Marzio association will provide information and insights into the history, technology, and railway culture.
