In a vibrant display of tradition and community spirit, the traditional Infiorata ceremony took center stage in Garibaldi Square today, Friday, December 8. The event, organized by the CIF – Centro Italiano Femminile, in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste, celebrated the age-old ritual of adorning the Marian Stele with an array of colorful flowers.

Poverty, elderly isolation, and migrant reception. These are among the pressing issues addressed by Bishop Enrico Trevisi of Trieste in his prayer during the Infiorata, the city’s celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

As is tradition, a small crowd gathered in Garibaldi Square, with the mayor and prefect in attendance, to pray and offer flowers to the Madonna. Among the topics touched upon by the bishop was violence – particularly against women, sparked by the tragic incident involving Giulia Cecchettin.

The bishop did not forget the plight of Wartsila workers, a matter he had addressed in a recent letter. He also emphasized the issue of end-of-life care, highlighting the need for medical attention and, above all, the importance of standing by those who are unwell.”

Led by the esteemed Bishop of Trieste, Monsignor Enrico Trevisi, the ceremony drew distinguished guests, including Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, Council President Francesco di Paola Panteca, and Government Commissioner for the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region Prefect of Trieste, Pietro Signoriello.

This sacred tradition, deeply rooted in Trieste’s cultural fabric, attracts locals and visitors alike, fostering a sense of unity and reverence.

As the sun bathed the square in a warm glow, Bishop Trevisi conducted the ceremony, infusing it with spiritual significance. The fragrant symphony of flowers provided a breathtaking backdrop to the prayers and blessings bestowed upon the gathered crowd.

Mayor Dipiazza expressed his admiration for the community’s dedication to preserving such cherished traditions. “The Infiorata is a testament to our shared heritage and the beauty that emerges when we come together to celebrate our cultural roots,” he remarked.

Council President Panteca echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of communal bonds in preserving Trieste’s unique identity. “In the heart of Garibaldi Square, amidst the petals and colors, we find a connection to our past and a commitment to pass down these customs to future generations,” Panteca stated.

Commissioner Signoriello, representing the government, underscored the significance of cultural events like the Infiorata in fostering a strong regional identity. “Trieste’s rich traditions, exemplified by ceremonies like these, contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our region,” he noted.

As the ceremony concluded, the fragility and fleeting beauty of the flower arrangements served as a poignant metaphor for the transience of life. Yet, the echoes of the Infiorata lingered, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those present, a testament to the enduring power of tradition in Trieste.
