The much-anticipated La Corsa della Bora 2024 was unveiled on Tuesday, December 12th, during a press conference held at the Sala Giunta. Trieste Mayor Roberto Dipiazza introduced the event, joined by mayors from neighboring regions, including Igor Gabrovec of Duino Aurisina, Monika Hrovatin of Sgonico, Sandy Klun of San Dorligo della Valle, and Marjan Verša, Deputy Mayor of Monrupino.
The prestigious trail running event, organized by Asd SentieroUNO, is scheduled to take place from January 2nd to January 6th, 2024. Over two thousand athletes from around the globe are gearing up to traverse the Italian and Slovenian Karst, embarking on a unique journey from the mountains to the shores of the Gulf of Trieste.
The event boasts eight different race distances tailored to various skill levels, with the highlight being the 164 km Ipertrail. In its ninth edition, the Ipertrail will unfold over five daily stages, starting from Ljubljana Castle and concluding at Portopiccolo in the Municipality of Duino Aurisina. Portopiccolo will also host the Bora Village, the event’s headquarters, and the finish line for all races, welcoming participants from over 40 nations.
The 2024 edition introduces several novelties, including the Terran Trail 38K (formerly Ecomarathon), starting from Piazza Unità in Trieste and venturing into the vineyards and caves of the Karst. The urban heart of Trieste will also feature prominently in the S1 Urban Trail 28K, commencing from Molo Audace. Additionally, the non-competitive S1 Family 13K will offer a scenic walk for families, tracing the final stretch of all races. For non-professional runners, it’s an opportunity to experience the thrill of competition and enjoy a panoramic stroll along a traffic-free coastal road.
The night race from Sgonico, the 80k Night Trail, promises a celestial journey across the Karst plateau, while the 21k starts from Prosecco and the 57k from Basovizza. Returning for the second year is the whimsical Beer Run, this time in the evening on January 5th, illuminating the village of Portopiccolo.
Apart from the Ipertrail, which spans from January 2nd to January 6th, the remaining races will take place on Epiphany Day.
The press conference highlighted the event as an inclusive experience, not just for competitors but for everyone, contributing to the local economy during the low season and promoting the region through local products served at refreshment points.
Tommaso de Mottoni, President of Asd SentieroUno and Race Director, celebrated a record-breaking turnout, with 40 competitors from over 20 nations in the 164k category. He emphasized the global recognition of the race as a tourist attraction, showcasing the beauty of the Venezia Giulia region.
Giorgio Mior, President of the Associazione Italiana Cultura e Sport Fvg, highlighted the innovative routes and unique features introduced with each edition, adding value to this significant event.
Ernesto Mari, delegate of Coni Trieste, underscored the importance of La Corsa della Bora 2024 as the first major event of the year, showcasing the entire province’s stunning landscapes.
Local mayors expressed their gratitude for including their territories in the race. Duino Aurisina Mayor Igor Gabrovec praised Portopiccolo as the ideal conclusion for the event, likening La Corsa della Bora to the “land” version of Barcolana.
San Dorligo della Valle Mayor Sandy Klun expressed satisfaction that their valley is once again part of the route, with Bagnoli’s Comunella contributing as a key refreshment point.
Sgonico Mayor Monika Hrovatin highlighted the event’s appeal to sports enthusiasts and its positive impact on post-holiday tourism, filling local hotels.
Monrupino Deputy Mayor Marjan Verša emphasized the event’s ability to unite neighboring countries, historically forming a unique community.
Flavio Vidonis, President of Gruppo Ermada and Duino Aurisina City Councilor Massimo Romita, extended gratitude to the organizers for successfully executing a significant project for the territory, overcoming the challenges of the past two pandemic-ridden years.
