In a tragic turn of events, Trieste-born photographer Paolo Giovannini has passed away at the age of 52. Several months ago, he faced a severe cardiac issue that progressively worsened over time.
Renowned internationally as a talented and passionate photographer, Giovannini made a mark as a photojournalist, gaining recognition for his aerial shot of the 2019 Barcolana regatta. This photograph had been handpicked by CNN as one of the top sports images of the year worldwide.

While primarily contributing to the Slovenian-language daily, Primorski dnevnik, based in Trieste, Giovannini’s work extended to collaborations with prestigious entities such as the Associated Press, Il Piccolo, and the editorial team of the Acon Regional Council. The latter expressed their condolences in an official statement released this afternoon.
In 2001, Giovannini co-founded the sports daily Citysport along with fellow colleagues, leaving behind a legacy that transcends borders and captures the essence of his passion for photography.
Paolo will forever be missed.
