Around 300 people gathered in Piazza Unità d’Italia today, responding to the unions’ call for solidarity with Wartsila workers facing an uncertain future. The demonstration aimed to draw attention to the ongoing struggle at the Wartsila plant in Trieste, where 300 employees were slated for layoffs more than a year ago.
Setting up a table with a prominent “Wartsila” banner, unions and workers utilized an amplification system for speeches, including remarks from Antonio Rodà, Uilm’s provincial secretary. He emphasized the importance of the Wärtsilä dispute, both for workers awaiting government responses and for the community at risk of losing a significant industrial presence.
The square became a symbol of support as current and former workers, political figures, and concerned citizens joined forces. Union representatives stressed the lack of certainty and the broader implications for the city’s industrial landscape.
Trieste’s Mayor, Roberto Dipiazza, present among the crowd, expressed his skepticism, stating, “I no longer trust Wärtsilä; it’s unfortunate, but it seems the Wartsila chapter has come to an end.”
