In a splendid celebration this morning, the 47th edition of the Christmas Underwater took place on December 26, 2023, the day of Santo Stefano. Originating in the distant year of 1976, Christmas Sub is a traditional event deeply embedded in the Triestine culture. This captivating ritual, a one-of-a-kind national spectacle, was meticulously orchestrated by the Sub Sea Club Trieste, and unfolded in the vicinity of Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, near the Royal Scale.

What began as a simple gathering among members to exchange underwater holiday greetings for divers and dockside wishes for fishermen has evolved into a cherished tradition. It has become a rendezvous point for all those connected to the sea—be they athletes, professionals, enthusiasts, or sea lovers.

The sacred mass took place dockside, led by our associate, Don Francesco Pesce, who later immersed himself in the designated stretch of sea within a specially crafted plexiglass bell. This allowed him to convey the Bishop’s message to the depths. The underwater footage was broadcast on a large screen for all to witness.

Post-mass, the Sub Sea Club Trieste graciously treated attendees to a small refreshment featuring panettone and mulled wine. The Alpine troops of the A.N.A. in Trieste facilitated the distribution, managing a field kitchen operated by their dedicated Civil Protection volunteers. It served as a splendid opportunity for everyone to gather, exchange holiday greetings, and revel in the festive spirit.

The organizing force behind this event, the Sub Sea Club Trieste, demonstrated its commitment to addressing marine pollution. As one of the pioneers in the region, the club has been actively involved in organizing seabed cleanups. During the immersion, our members conducted a visual inspection of the seabed in the concession area, contributing to the ongoing efforts to combat marine pollution.
