In a thrilling convergence of strategic minds, the 6th International Chess Tournament at Starhotels Savoia Excelsior Palace in Riva del Madracchio, Trieste, promises a few days of intense chess battles from December 27 to 29, 2023. Organized by the Chess Academy Trieste, the prestigious event caters to both local and international chess enthusiasts.

The tournament unfolds at the elegant Sala Tergeste of Starhotels Savoia Excelsior Palace, featuring a robust format of five rounds using the Dutch variation of the Swiss pairing system. Technical tiebreakers, including Buchholz cut1, Buchholz tot, and A.R.O., add an extra layer of excitement to the competition. With a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move from the outset, players are mandated to notate their moves.

Divided into two categories, the “Trofeo Hotel Savoia” is reserved for players with an Elo Fide rating greater than 1800, while the “Memorial Rozmann” beckons those with a rating below 1799.

Italian players affiliated with FSI 2023 and foreign players holding a FIN (FIDE Identity Number) are eligible to participate. Registration can be completed on-site until December 27, 2023, with the possibility of joining the Chess Academy on the spot or presenting a signed membership declaration from their home chess club.

Exciting prizes await the top five players overall in both Tournament A and B, as well as category winners for Over 65, Over 55, Female, Under 16, Under 10, and Juniors.

Special considerations are in place, with reduced fees for players under 16 years old, while Grandmasters and International Masters enjoy complimentary registration.

Over the years, the tournament has attracted maestros from Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Iran, and Albania, adding an international flair to the competition.

President of the Chess Academy, Massimo Varini, emphasizes the tournament’s weekend format, which appeals to those combining sports with tourism during the festive season. Grandmasters are expected not only from Italy but also from Serbia, Croatia, Austria, and Slovenia.

Distinctive to Chess Academy-organized events is their meticulous adherence to FIDE’s “anti-cheating” regulations. Rigorous checks, including the confiscation of electronic devices, ensure a fair and level playing field, preventing players from receiving assistance from powerful chess software during critical moments.

Throughout the tournament days, visitors and players can seek assistance from multilingual hostesses for information, wardrobe services, phone and bag handling, and any logistical needs.

The technical aspects of the event are overseen by the Chess Academy ASD, the first chess school in the region recognized by the Italian Chess Federation in 2014. Their expertise, honed through the organization of the International Festival in Lignano Sabbiadoro, now in its fifth edition, ensures a seamless and professional chess experience.
