In a groundbreaking move toward environmentally conscious maritime construction, Fincantieri has inked a “green” construction loan deal totaling €415 million ($489 million) with Intesa Sanpaolo (IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division) and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP). The funds will fuel the construction of the Mein Schiff Relax, the pioneering first vessel of the inTUItion class—a dual-fuel (Liquid Natural Gas – LNG and Marine Gas Oil – MGO) cruise ship series crafted by Fincantieri for TUI Cruises, a joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Marking a significant milestone for the company, this financing initiative represents Fincantieri’s inaugural foray into a pooled arrangement of this nature.

Dubbed “green,” the funding is so designated due to the project’s adherence to the European Taxonomy’s climate change mitigation objectives. The Mein Schiff Relax qualifies as a “low-carbon emission ship,” making a substantial contribution to climate change mitigation goals. This is evidenced by (i) an Environmental Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) value that is 10% below the applicable EEDI requirements and (ii) propulsion powered by zero-emission or renewable-source fuels.

This venture aligns seamlessly with Fincantieri’s strategic roadmap to deliver a cruise ship with net-zero emissions—a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices.
