On the mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italian skiing sensations Brignone and Bassino are set to make their mark. Athletes, including local talent Lara Della Mea from Tarvisio, will be hitting the slopes of Zoncolan in preparation for the upcoming World Cup stage on January 6th and 7th in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, featuring a giant slalom and a slalom event.
Trieste, January 1, 2024 – Starting Wednesday, January 3, the number 1 track on Mount Zoncolan will be at the disposal of the Italian women’s alpine skiing team, gearing up for the next World Cup stop in Kranjska Gora. The team has chosen Friuli Venezia Giulia for optimal preparation, where a giant slalom and slalom are scheduled for January 6th and 7th in Slovenia. The Italian squad boasts the presence of Federica Brignone (from Valle d’Aosta, winner of the 2020 World Cup, Italy’s most successful skier with 24 victories and 62 podiums in her career, not counting world and Olympic medals) and Marta Bassino (from Piedmont, world champion in parallel slalom at Cortina 2021 and in super-G at Courchevel/Meribel 2023, and winner of the 2021 World Cup giant slalom). Completing the national team is Lara Della Mea from Tarvisio (winner of the Europa Cup slalom in Mayrhofen, Austria, in early December 2023, and coming off a strong performance in the World Cup giant slalom in Lienz, Austria, where she finished 29th. She also has a world bronze medal in the team event in Sweden in 2019), along with Roberta Melesi, Asja Zenere, Elisa Platino, Laura Pirovano, and other promising young talents.
The Italian team will train on January 3rd and 4th, and on Wednesday, January 3rd, PromoTurismoFVG will organize a “Welcome Event” for the skiing champions in the outdoor area of the Enzo Moro hotel (Monte Zoncolan, Sutrio) at 11:30, following the athletes’ training session.
Alongside the Italian team, the Swedish skiers have also chosen Zoncolan and Friuli Venezia Giulia as their training base until the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
Additionally, Tarvisio and Sella Nevea will host national teams from Italy, Croatia, France, and Slovenia for alpine skiing World Cup training sessions focused on slalom during the first week of 2024 (January 3-5). The slalom specialists will tackle the upper part of Lussari, the “Cappia” slope, and the most “technical” trails of Sella Nevea. The training schedule may be subject to changes based on weather conditions.
