Metroarea architects tasked with the feasibility study of the new Barcola coastline received community feedback through an open questionnaire. Assessing the vulnerability to extreme weather events, residents showed support for expanding the Trieste waterfront.

Environmental Defense Assessor Fabio Scoccimarro highlighted citizens’ concerns during the presentation of the survey, emphasizing the need for coastal defense and increased beach amenities, conceived over a year ago.

Key findings include 55% dissatisfaction with current beach facilities. However, 73% and 70% expressed approval for expanding rocky beaches and the possibility of constructing piers, respectively.

“The questionnaire reflects increased awareness about essential measures for safeguarding the coastline,” noted Scoccimarro. Accessibility, waterfront development, and Trieste’s growing appeal were also significant concerns.

Over 8,000 participants, with 2,500 offering personal insights, showcased citizen engagement. This aligns with category associations’ interests during the project’s initial presentation.

“The dialogue continues with stakeholders for a healthy debate,” said Scoccimarro. The next phase, concluding by summer, involves the Executive Plan and Urban Planning Variant, with citizen input integral to the process.

The synthesis of today’s results and the upcoming questionnaire by the Municipality of Trieste will provide a comprehensive overview in the coming weeks.
