In a riveting performance directed by Luigi Saravo, Ugo Dighero steps into the iconic role of the miser in Molière’s timeless comedy “The Miser.” The curtain rises on Thursday, January 11, with a unique twist that brings the classic tale into the present day, exploring the enduring power of greed in our modern world.

Show Details: “Dighero, known for his success in ‘Tango Macondo,’ graces the Politeama Rossetti stage once again, embodying the titular character in Molière’s ‘The Miser,’ skillfully directed by Luigi Saravo. The play runs from Thursday, January 11, to Sunday, January 14, as part of the Prosa season at the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia.”

Contemporary Adaptation: “Saravo’s direction transports ‘The Miser’ into a contemporary setting, weaving in elements from our daily lives, including smartphones, 1970s fashion, and commercials that torment the miser, Arpagone. The original music by Paolo Silvestri and the fresh translation by Letizia Russo contribute to giving the production a distinctly modern rhythm.”

Money Matters: “Dighero, leveraging his natural comedic talent, portrays the greedy Arpagone, constantly putting his interests above those of his children. Despite their father’s opposition, Cleante and Elisa, played by Stefano Dilauro and Elisabetta Mazzullo respectively, navigate a humorous web of intrigue to marry their true loves.”

Director’s Insight: “Luigi Saravo delves into the central theme of Molière’s ‘The Miser’—money. In a contemporary society driven by consumerism and the pursuit of endless economic growth, Arpagone’s conservative and stagnant financial approach seems subversive, standing in stark opposition to the consumerist tyranny fueled by advertising and the pathological desire for replacement.”

Supporting Cast: “Alongside Dighero, Mariangeles Torres takes on the roles of Freccia, the servant who pilfers Arpagone’s money chest, and Frosina, the maid/intermediary who sets the irresistible chain of misunderstandings into motion.”

Engaging the Audience: “On Friday, January 12, at 6 p.m., the Café Rossetti will host an engaging session with Ugo Dighero and other cast members of ‘The Miser,’ moderated by Paolo Quazzolo, a theater historian and professor at the University of Trieste. The event, organized by the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia in collaboration with the Circolo della Cultura e delle Arti, is free, subject to seat availability.”

Performance Details: “‘The Miser’ takes the stage at the Sala Assicurazioni Generali from January 11 to 14. Tickets are available at the Politeama Rossetti Box Office and through the usual channels of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia.”
