Development of Piazza Libertà between station and Porto Vecchio to involve construction of Karstic micro-landscape, while ambiguity remains regarding future of city’s Migrant crisis.

During a press conference on Thursday, 11 January, Mayor DiPiazza, Regional Councilor Roberti and council Lodi announced the city’s development plans for Piazza della Libertà, the historic site of the recently demolished Sala Tripcovich positioned between the station and the entrance to Porto Vecchio. The redevelopment of Piazza della Libertà coincides with the city’s broader initiative to rejuvenate the Old Port, which currently lies in a semi-abandoned state.

According to Mayor DiPiazza, Piazza Libertà’s new look will feature the replica of a karstic landscape – an homage to the city’s hinterland and a prompt for tourists to explore Trieste beyond its city center. However, the presence of Regional Councilor Roberti, responsible for security and immigration, underscored a crucial aspect in discussions surrounding the station and the old port: the numerous migrants who have established informal camps in surrounding parks and derelict buildings, notably the Silos, due to a lack of housing solutions. Addressing this issue, both Roberti and DiPiazza emphasized the implementation of heightened Carabinieri presence in the area, as well as the recent relocation of 200 migrants from Trieste.
