The 35th Trieste Film Festival kicks off from January 19 to 27, featuring a lineup that includes Radu Jude’s “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World” as the opening film and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” as the closing film. The festival, focused on Central and Eastern European cinema, will also showcase special events such as screenings of “Beautiful Beings” by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson and “The Red Coloured Grey Truck” by Srđan Koljević.

In the “Off the Beaten… Screens” section, debut films like Bosnia’s “Cherry Juice” and Hungary’s “Cactusman” will be highlighted, along with other productions like “Arthur & Diana” and the short film “Maris B653.” The Documentary Competition features ten titles, with notable works by young women directors, including Armenian filmmaker Shoghakat Vardanyan’s award-winning “1489.” Out of competition, films from the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia will be showcased, such as “Al di là dei lupi,” “50 anni di CLU,” and “Il Cinema Volta.” “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” by Estonian director Anna Hints, a recent winner at the EFA Awards, Sundance, and Tallinn’s Black Nights Festival, is also on the agenda.

The Corso Salani Prize will include five Italian titles yet to be distributed in Italy, including Marco Amenta’s “Anna,” Ludovica Fales’ “Lala,” Andrea Adriatico’s “La solitudine è questa,” Claudia Brignone’s “Tempo d’attesa” (winner of Best Italian Documentary at the Turin Film Festival), and Samira Guadagnuolo and Tiziano Doria’s “L’albume d’oro.” The Short Film Competition will present 16 works across three programs. Nicoletta Romeo, the festival director, provided insights on the festival’s significance in a recent interview.
