In a poignant ceremony orchestrated by the Trieste Jewish Community in collaboration with local authorities, 13 additional Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) were reverently laid across the city throughout the day.
Distinguished figures, including Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, Prefect Pietro Signoriello, Alessandro Salonichio (President of the Jewish Community), Rabbi Eliahu Alexander Meloni, and Gunter Demnig, the visionary behind the Stolpersteine initiative, graced the event. Governor Fedriga highlighted the region’s commitment to combating anti-Semitism through a memorandum signed with Israeli municipalities.
Expressing appreciation for the active involvement of students from Petrarca High School, participants from Conservatorio Tartini, and the Victor Ulmann Festival, Fedriga emphasized the pivotal role of youth in instilling principles of truth. “Initiating with the younger generation is paramount,” asserted Fedriga, “to safeguard the 21st century from the resurgence of intolerance and new persecutions.”
The inscriptions on the Stolpersteine were meticulously crafted by the Trieste Jewish Community, with valuable contributions from scholars, organizations, and research institutions, including the National Association of Former Deportees in Trieste and the Contemporary Jewish Documentation Center in Milan.
