On Monday, the City of Trieste unveiled its plans for Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024 during a presentation at the Museum of Oriental Art’s Conference Hall. The event also introduced new protocols for accessing institutional ceremonies at the Risiera di San Sabba, outlined in an Emergency and Evacuation Management Plan.

Key figures such as Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, Councilor for Culture and Tourism Giorgio Rossi, Trieste Prefect Pietro Signoriello, Police Chief Pietro Ostuni, and other authorities addressed the audience.

Councilor Giorgio Rossi highlighted the need for rules governing access to the Risiera di San Sabba, stating, “In previous years, we faced challenges in accessing the facility, prompting us to establish guidelines.”

Prefect Pietro Signoriello noted the difficulties faced after the events of April 25 and emphasized the goal of developing an emergency management plan for normalizing Risiera usage during significant events.

Mayor Roberto Dipiazza expressed satisfaction with the newly completed Management Plan after 17 years, emphasizing its compliance with regulations and improved management of public and official entries.

Trieste’s Police Chief, Pietro Ostuni, commended Councilor Giorgio Rossi for the technical excellence of the work.

Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024 will focus on January 27, commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz. The City of Trieste’s commemorative ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday, January 28.

The day’s events will kick off at 9:00 with a wreath-laying ceremony by the State Police at Giovanni Palatucci’s plaque inside the Coroneo Prison. This will be followed by a silent march to the Central Station at 9:30 and a wreath-laying ceremony by the Municipality of Trieste at 10:00, both commemorating significant moments in history.

At 11:00, the traditional commemorative ceremony at the Risiera di San Sabba’s inner courtyard will take place, featuring political and religious authorities.

This year introduces new access protocols for institutional ceremonies at the Risiera di San Sabba, formulated to enhance public and official entry management. The Municipality of Trieste’s Emergency and Evacuation Management Plan, created by safety professional Enrico Zamparutti, was officially approved on December 28.

The Plan, developed in collaboration with local authorities, outlines access procedures, including a maximum limit of 2,200 individuals inside the Risiera di San Sabba. Accredited individuals will have separate access, while the public can enter freely until reaching capacity, with additional entries contingent on exits. The ceremony will be livestreamed, and access will be limited to the inner courtyard during the event, with other spaces reopening after the ceremony concludes.

The presentation also covered the Museum of the Risiera di San Sabba’s cultural activities for Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024, made possible with support from the Ministry of Culture. Additionally, 13 new Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) will be laid in Trieste on January 16, commemorating victims of Nazi-Fascist persecution. The initiative is organized by the Jewish Community of Trieste, with collaboration from the Municipality of Trieste, Aned, and local educational and cultural institutions.
