Renowned architect Andreas Kipar has revealed the ambitious “Freedom Passage” project, designed to breathe new life into Trieste’s Liberty Square, Santos City Square, and their connection to the revamped Old Port waterfront, now referred to as Alive Port.

The unveiling took place in the Municipality’s Blue Room, attended by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, architect Andreas Kipar, Municipal Assessor Elisa Lodi, and Regional Assessor Pierpaolo Roberti. The project, backed by an allocation of nearly $2.7 million from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, aims to capitalize on Trieste’s historical and scenic heritage, fostering tourism and economic vitality.

“Freedom Passage” is more than just a revitalization effort; it represents a holistic vision for Trieste’s future, emphasizing the principles of freedom, space, and vibrant biodiversity. Andreas Kipar’s presentation detailed a comprehensive plan, leveraging elements like the Karst landscape and historical features to create a unique urban experience.

The project envisions a transformed urban area, strategically designed to welcome visitors arriving via the Saba Silos Parking and adjacent transportation hubs. This includes cruise ship arrivals, aligning with Trieste’s goal to showcase not only its city center but also the scenic Karst region.

At the heart of the plan is the “microlandscape,” an innovative concept that integrates natural elements such as Karst rock, local vegetation, and a 5-meter-high monolith, creating a unique blend of urban and natural aesthetics. The project also includes strategic adjustments to pavement layouts, preserving existing trees while introducing new specimens for a cohesive and visually appealing environment.

The technical genesis of the project involves a meticulous planning process, including a feasibility study (PFTE) conducted by Andreas Kipar in collaboration with the Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape Superintendence of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The PFTE, verified in November 2023, lays the groundwork for the forthcoming administrative process.

Mayor Dipiazza highlighted the project’s significance in attracting tourists, with Trieste welcoming 1.4 million visitors in 2023. The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, recognizing the potential impact, swiftly allocated funds for the endeavor.

The next steps involve the validation of the PFTE and the initiation of the municipal approval process, including a Service Conference to gather essential opinions from stakeholders. With strong financial backing and detailed plans, “Freedom Passage” is poised to transform Trieste’s urban landscape, offering a blend of historical preservation, environmental sustainability, and enhanced connectivity. Construction is expected to commence promptly, marking a significant milestone in Trieste’s urban development.
