Muggia’s renaissance has been declared. Now let’s have some fun: the road to Muggia’s 70th Carnival.
Whilst Trieste has been in the international spotlight for some time now, Muggia’s not lagging behind. International travelers began to flock to the beautiful town already a decade ago, where the easy wave of living is as attractive to Friuli Venezia Giulia locals as to the incoming expats. Not to mention the fun events the town is famous for, the most glorious of them being the annual Carnival. Every local knows that it must be taken seriously, so we asked the man behind it all, Mario Vascotto, what the yearly festival is really about.
In 2024 the Muggia Carnival turns 70, an important birthday with preparations already underway. As every year in autumn, work has already begun for the great event which will take place on Sunday, 11 February, 2024.

What happened in the autumn?
The companies began to demolish the previous year’s wagons, clean up the space and start construction of the new wagons. All materials are recycled and we try not to waste anything.
When are the themes of the parade chosen?
Immediately after the end of the previous carnival. And I remember that our carnival is different from the others, because it is a “street theatre”, it means that the companies bring a kind of theatrical allure. After choosing the theme, the costumes, direction, and scenography, floats are decided. Groups are formed which, for each company, have different tasks to carry out.
What will be special about the 70th birthday next year?
I hope to make a few ideas come true. It will definitely be something grand. Most projects will be revealed in the upcoming months, but one thing I can tell you – it will be an event to remember.
