Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has officially declared its intention to establish a new operational hub at Ronchi dei Legionari, adjacent to the regional airport.

The strategic move was revealed during a press conference attended by Trieste Airport CEO Consalvo and the Region’s President Fedriga. Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson outlined the company’s ambitious strategy to operate ten international and six domestic flights from the upcoming base.

In a significant development, President Fedriga emphasized the positive economic impact of this investment on both the region and airport growth. Describing it as a strategic move, he noted that the investment ensures not only the expansion of the airport but also contributes to the broader economic development of the region.

Ryanair has already announced five new connections with Ronchi: Berlin, Paris, Krakow, Seville, and Brindisi. Additionally, a sixth new route will be disclosed next week. This expansion into Friuli Venezia Giulia was influenced by the region’s decision to eliminate the 6.5 euro airport tax per departing passenger.

The establishment of the new base is expected to generate thirty new jobs at the airport. Wilson assured that the recruitment for both flight attendants and pilots would be locally sourced. The impact of the Ryanair base is substantial, creating an additional 600 jobs, including indirect employment opportunities. The airport aims to achieve a transit of 1.3 million passengers by 2024, following a record-breaking 930,000 passengers in 2023.
