In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the landscape is undergoing a transformation in mobility, marked by a new era of usefulness, convenience, speed, and environmental friendliness. A recent addition to this shift is the introduction of the “Blues,” a cutting-edge regional train resulting from strategic investments outlined in the partnership with Trenitalia.

Governor Massimiliano Fedriga shared insights during the inaugural journey of the “Blues” on the Sacile-Maniago line, attended by regional officials including Infrastructure and Territory Assessor Cristina Amirante and Trenitalia’s Regional Business and Intermodal Development Director, Maria Giaconia.

The “Blues” stands out as a triple-power hybrid, set to gradually replace the existing “Minuetto” fleet across the entire regional network. This initiative is part of Trenitalia’s comprehensive investment program, totaling around 400 million euros. The objective is clear – an enhancement of services for the region’s commuters. Delivery plans include an additional six “Blues” and seven “Rock” trains by 2024, collectively contributing to a significant reduction in the average age of the regional fleet.

Assessor Amirante highlighted the innovative nature of the “Blues,” emphasizing its ability to curtail air and noise pollution during station stops. Remarkably, the train can traverse all regional lines, including those yet to undergo electrification, such as the ongoing electrification project on the Casarsa-Portogruaro line. This development opens up prospects for increased connectivity, notably with Gorizia, set to become the European capital of culture alongside Nova Gorica in 2025. Plans for direct services from Mestre are also in the works.

Director Giaconia echoed this sentiment, expressing satisfaction with the delivery of the “Blues” as a testament to Trenitalia’s commitment to the complete renewal of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s regional fleet. The overarching goal is to offer passengers journeys of ever-increasing comfort.

The “Blues” marks a generational leap in technology, showcasing its adaptability across diverse terrains. Its triple-power capability allows it to seamlessly transition between diesel and electric modes, with added batteries for the first and last mile, eliminating the need for traditional fuels. This not only reduces emissions and noise but also provides an energy-efficient solution for uphill climbs. The hybrid technology, heralded as a breakthrough, promises a 50% reduction in fuel consumption compared to current diesel trains, accompanied by a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions.

Beyond its environmental prowess, the “Blues” is designed with passenger comfort in mind. Offering 265 seats, dedicated spaces for bicycles, and full accessibility for individuals with reduced mobility, the train aligns with a vision of sustainable and inclusive regional transportation. As the “Blues” embarks on its journey, it symbolizes a stride toward a greener and more efficient future for the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
