The hallowed grounds of the National Monument of Risiera di San Sabba, located at Via Palatucci 5, played host to a solemn commemorative ceremony this Sunday morning marking the “Day of Remembrance 2024.”
Dignitaries from across the region gathered at Risiera, including the banners of the City of Trieste (adorned with the Gold Medal of Military Valor), the City of Muggia (awarded the Silver Medal of Military Valor), the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the Municipalities of Duino Aurisina and San Dorligo della Valle.
Alongside civil, military, and religious authorities stood representatives and standards of various groups and organizations. Among them were the Associations of Deportees and Antifascist Political Persecutees, Partisans, Volunteers of Freedom, Fallen Heroes, Combat Associations, Trade Unions, and the International Committee of the Nazi Lager of Risiera di San Sabba.
In a poignant gesture, laurel wreaths were laid by President Massimiliano Fedriga on behalf of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Prefect and Government Commissioner Pietro Signoriello representing the Trieste Prefecture, and Mayor Roberto Dipiazza representing the City of Trieste. Additionally, representatives of participating associations and groups joined in this tribute.
Following these tributes, Mayor Roberto Dipiazza of Trieste and Mayor Tanja Kosmina of Monrupino, representing smaller municipalities, addressed the gathering.
Subsequently, religious ceremonies unfolded. Monsignor Enrico Trevisi, Bishop of Trieste, presided over the Catholic rite, while Chief Rabbi Paul Alexandre Meloni led the Jewish community’s service. Father Raško Radovic officiated for the Serbian Orthodox community, Archimandrite Grigorius Miliaris for the Greek Eastern community, and Pastor Peter Ciaccio for the Adventist, Helvetic, Lutheran, and Methodist communities.
