Today, February 5th, marks World Nutella Day, a global celebration of the beloved Italian chocolate-hazelnut spread that has captured hearts and taste buds around the world.

But this year’s festivities carry even more weight as Nutella commemorates its 60th anniversary since its inception by Ferrero, an iconic brand that embodies the essence of “Made in Italy” success, originating back in 1964.

The origins of Nutella trace back to post-war Italy, a time when cocoa was a luxury in short supply. In response to this scarcity, Ferrero, originally a humble pastry shop nestled in Alba, northern Italy, concocted a solution: a delectable paste crafted from hazelnuts, sugar, and a hint of cocoa.

Initially known as Giandujot, this sweet creation was initially sold in solid form before its transformation into the creamy, spreadable Nutella that graces breakfast tables worldwide today.

Over the decades, Nutella has transcended borders to become a culinary sensation, captivating palates across continents. In 2019, the brand expanded its empire with the wildly successful launch of Nutella biscuits, further solidifying its status as a household name.

Italy, rightfully proud of this culinary marvel, has paid homage to Nutella’s legacy on multiple occasions. In 2014, the country commemorated Nutella’s 50th anniversary with a special postage stamp, while 2021 saw the unveiling of a limited-edition €5 coin in honor of this beloved treat.

World Nutella Day itself has become a cultural phenomenon since its inception in 2007, thanks to American blogger Sara Rosso. A platform for Nutella enthusiasts worldwide to share their love for the spread through photos, videos, and recipes on social media, the hashtag #WorldNutellaDay has become a digital testament to the spread’s enduring popularity.
