In the heart of Trieste’s cultural scene, the Verdi Opera House stands as a bastion of artistic expression. Continuing its tradition of showcasing Central European musical culture, the theater embarks on a new production of Richard Strauss’s “Ariadne auf Naxos.”
This collaborative effort between the Verdi of Trieste, the Municipal Theatre of Bologna, and La Fenice of Venice promises to offer audiences a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Directed by Paul Curran and featuring costumes and sets by Gary McCann, the production aims to explore the intersection of Baroque elegance and post-modern aesthetics.
Stable Music Director Enrico Calesso leads the ensemble, ensuring a performance rooted in authenticity and depth. The cast, including sopranos Simone Schneider and Margarita Vilsone, brings their expertise to the stage, promising a captivating experience for audiences.
Director Paul Curran sheds light on the production’s creative process, offering insight into the juxtaposition of aesthetic worlds: “It’s a mad, mixed-up world. Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal were discussing it… And so Ariadne will do a Baroque opera, and Zerbinetta will do a Katy Perry concert.” This exploration of contrasting styles adds depth and complexity to the performance.
As the curtains rise on “Ariadne auf Naxos,” patrons are invited to immerse themselves in a world of music, culture, and artistic expression.
