In a riveting installment of the renowned lecture series “History Lessons – The Power of Ideas,” set to take place this Sunday, February 18th at 11 a.m. at the illustrious Verdi Theater, the spotlight will illuminate the captivating figure of “Emma Goldman and Love,” featuring esteemed historian and journalist, Veronica Palumbo.
“Love, whether fleeting or eternal, is the sole creative foundation for a new world,” Emma Goldman, the Russian-born American philosopher and anarchist, famously declared. A pioneering revolutionary who vocally opposed the authoritarian drift of the Soviet Union, a champion for women’s rights, and a fervent advocate for contraception and birth control, Goldman challenged the archetype of womanhood as a mere “reproductive machine,” sparking controversy with traditional family ideals. Her convictions led her to imprisonment, earning her the moniker of “America’s Most Dangerous Woman.”
History Lessons: Referencing Hegel’s seminal work on the philosophy of history, the concept of “cosmic-historical individuals” emerges — those luminaries who indelibly shape the zeitgeist with their actions. While history often extols the exploits of grand conquerors and rulers like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon, it begs the question: are they the sole architects of history? Indeed, pivotal societal shifts owe themselves not only to monarchs and military leaders but also to visionaries who revolutionize social norms and values. This series honors these trailblazers and their transformative worldviews.
The lecture series “History Lessons – The Power of Ideas” is conceived and curated by Laterza Publishers, endorsed by the Municipality of Trieste, and made possible with the support of the CRTrieste Foundation and Trieste Trasporti. Media partner: “Il Piccolo.”
Attendance: Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
The lectures will also be streamed live on the Municipality of Trieste’s YouTube channel.
Don’t miss the upcoming session, “Bruce Springsteen and Hope,” featuring Alessandro Portelli, scheduled for Sunday, February 25th.
