After more than 15 years of absence, Friuli Venezia Giulia returns as a protagonist at the Berlinale, the International Film Festival of Berlin, one of the most anticipated events on the international stage. It does so thanks to ‘Gloria!’, the film marking the directorial debut of Margherita Vicario, largely shot in our region. The film, one of the two Italian entries in competition, will have its world premiere on Wednesday, February 21st at 4 PM.
“This is a significant opportunity for visibility for our territory, considering the numerous locations involved in the shooting: Cervignano del Friuli, Gorizia, the lagoon of Grado, and Udine, alongside the Friulian mountains with the Jôf di Montasio and the eighteenth-century Villa Steffaneo Roncato in San Vito al Torre,” commented the Assessor for Production Activities and Tourism Sergio Emidio Bini upon hearing the news of the world premiere presentation of the film ‘Gloria!’ at the Berlinale, produced by Tempesta, with Rai Cinema and Tellfilm, and realized with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission-PromoTurismoFVG, as well as the Ministry of Culture – Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual and with the support of the Federal Office of Culture and the Ticino Film Commission.
“This is one of the first projects funded in 2023 by the Film Commission,” explains Bini, “and among those that have had the highest impact on the regional territory, with a direct expenditure declared by the production of over one million euros, not counting the positive outcomes on the industry.”
‘Gloria!’ marks the directorial debut of singer and actress Margherita Vicario, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Anita Rivaroli.
The film is set in a female college in late 18th-century Venice and tells the story of Teresa, a young woman with visionary talent. Alongside a group of skilled musicians, the protagonist transcends centuries and prejudices, inventing rebellious, light, and modern music.
The cast includes Galatea Bellugi, Carlotta Gamba, Veronica Lucchesi (La Rappresentante di Lista), Maria Vittoria Dallasta, Sara Mafodda, Paolo Rossi, Elio (Elio e le storie tese), Natalino Balasso, Anita Kravos, Vincenzo Crea, Jasmin Mattei.
The Fvg Film Commission was established in 2000 and was among the first to be founded in Italy.
“If other regions have drawn inspiration from this model over time,” Bini recalled, “it means that our system is a national excellence. Recently, we have included this entity within PromoTurismoFVG, as an additional tool to strengthen the promotion of the territory. The fact that large companies and productions recognized internationally choose locations offered by our region is a sign of the effectiveness of the path we have taken.
