In Trieste, dogs reign as the most beloved companions, outnumbering their human counterparts with over 23 thousand registered in the city—that’s one dog for every nine residents. From wagging tails to heartfelt snuggles, these furry friends play an integral role in their owners’ lives, often considered cherished members of the family by 85% of dog owners and 76% of cat owners alike.
However, amidst this affection, concerns arise about responsible pet ownership. Neglecting to scoop up after their four-legged friends can tarnish public spaces and pose health risks. To gauge community sentiment, we interviewed Trieste locals on their perceptions of pet care practices in the city. While many praised responsible pet ownership, others highlighted areas for improvement, emphasizing the importance of communal efforts to ensure the well-being of both pets and residents in this canine-centric city.
