In a recent decree, the Italian Ministry of University and Research has reaffirmed Professor Nicola Casagli’s tenure as president of the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS). With this confirmation, Casagli, who has steered the institute since 2020, is set to continue his leadership until 2028.
Expressing gratitude for the Ministry’s trust, Casagli emphasized the institute’s pivotal role in the global scientific community. He highlighted the institute’s achievements over the past four years, citing its resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic and its success in securing funding through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Under Casagli’s stewardship, OGS has expanded its footprint across Italy, establishing new branches in Venice, Milazzo, and Livorno. The institute has also garnered accolades such as the Public Merit award from the Department of Civil Protection and the historic Seal of Trieste.
Casagli noted significant strides in personnel recruitment and scientific output during his tenure, with a notable increase in both staff numbers and research publications. Financially, OGS has seen a doubling of resources, thanks in part to successful participation in funding initiatives like the PNRR.
Looking ahead, Casagli outlined OGS’s commitment to supporting sustainable development through scientific innovation. He underscored the institute’s values of excellence, inclusivity, and societal impact as guiding principles for its strategic vision.
In addition to his role at OGS, Casagli is a distinguished academic, holding a professorship in Applied Geology at the University of Florence. His expertise in geological risks and disaster management has earned him international recognition, including prestigious honors such as the Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
With over 700 scientific publications and numerous patents to his name, Casagli’s contributions extend far beyond academia, making him a pivotal figure in advancing research and innovation in Italy and beyond.
