On Saturday, March 9, 2024, as part of the “Learning While Walking” series, the second event dedicated to “The Sea and Castellieri: The Castelliere of Monte Grisa” will take place.
Hosted by the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste, this outdoor lecture features Paolo Paronuzzi, a professor of applied geology at the University of Udine and a geoarchaeologist.
Castellieri, those well-known sites often frequented by hikers exploring the Trieste Karst, are rarely imagined in their fundamental relationship with the Adriatic Sea. These fortified hill settlements have had a close connection with the northern Adriatic, crucial for their interactions with surrounding populations.
The outdoor lecture at Monte Grisa’s castelliere, less renowned than its neighboring sanctuary, offers an ideal opportunity to appreciate a 3800-year-old hill fort (from the final phase of the Early Bronze Age). Participants can enjoy a spectacular view of the Gulf of Trieste and the eastern Friulian lowlands without embarking on strenuous hikes.
Attendance is free but requires prior registration via a downloadable form on the museum’s website. The form will be collected upon arrival, and attendees can also fill it out on-site. Sturdy footwear and familiarity with rocky trails are essential for the conference route.
Meeting time: 2:45 PM
Meeting point: Parking lot of the Sanctuary of Monte Grisa
