Regional councilor Pierpaolo Roberti, tasked with overseeing Security and Immigration, conveyed to ANSA the pressing public health and safety concerns associated with individuals bedding down in a derelict structure, regardless of their migrant status.
“The urgent imperative is to clear out the Silos and ensure the departure of those individuals from Trieste, as the situation within its confines has become untenable,” Roberti told ANSA.
Roberti emphasized that responsibility for this predicament does not rest with regional authorities; rather, it lies squarely with a private entity that has neglected the property for years, exploiting the situation for political ends. Coop Alleanza 3.0, the current proprietors of the Silos, recently stirred controversy by urging governmental bodies to address the conditions of the area and its inhabitants.
When queried about the potential repurposing of the former municipal market to accommodate migrants, a proposal championed by the RiseUp group and outlined in a joint project by the Municipality and the ministry eighteen months prior, Roberti underscored that while the matter falls outside regional jurisdiction, discussions with the Municipality are ongoing regarding the establishment of a transit center for those in need of overnight accommodation in Trieste.
Roberti, however, voiced reservations about the suitability of Largo Santos for such a venture, citing its proximity to a railway station and the delicate nature of the surrounding area. He cautioned that any decision-making process would be complex and not amenable to swift resolution, ANSA reports.
