On Saturday, March 16th, “Learning While Walking – the outdoor lecture series hosted by the Scientific Museums of Trieste,” will tackle one of the most urgent topics reshaping our lives: climate pollution and its profound impact on nature and the economy.

Renato Colucci, from the CNR Institute of Polar Sciences and professor of Glaciology at the University of Trieste, along with Nicola Bressi, a naturalist and zoologist at the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste, will lead an exploration of a karst area in Trieste’s hinterland.

This region was historically so frigid that it sustained beech trees, raspberries, and ermines, while ice production and sales thrived as a livelihood for local families and a key commercial venture for the port of Trieste. It’s a recent past that now seems almost unbelievable, closely tied to the disappearance of glaciers in the Alps.

Participation is free but requires registration through a downloadable form, available here: Link to registration form. Registration can also be completed on-site.

Participants should come prepared for the conference route, which spans approximately 5 km and includes rugged, rocky, and muddy terrain.

Date: Saturday, March 16th Meeting Time: 2:20 PM Meeting Point: Basovizza Church (accessible via bus 51 and 39/) Expected End Time: 6 PM

The meeting will proceed rain or shine; any potential cancelations will be decided on-site.
