In a bid to transform its historic waterfront, Trieste unveiled plans at the prestigious MIPIM 2024 conference in Cannes for a sweeping urban redevelopment initiative set to redefine the city’s landscape. Led by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, the project, dubbed “Porto Vecchio – Porto Vivo,” aims to breathe new life into the aging port district.

Scheduled to kick off on March 25th, the endeavor will see an infusion of €19 million into the rejuvenation of the iconic Monumental Avenue in Porto Vecchio – Porto Vivo. This substantial investment will cover essential infrastructure upgrades, including the modernization of underground utilities, roadways, pedestrian pathways, cycling lanes, lighting systems, and the creation of green spaces.

Speaking from MIPIM, Mayor Dipiazza expressed optimism about the project’s prospects, noting the positive reception it has garnered both domestically and internationally. “With these interventions, as per our established program, we will realize a pivotal axis within Porto Vecchio – Porto Vivo, enhancing not only its infrastructure but also its appeal to residents and visitors alike,” he declared.

Giulio Bernetti, Director of the Department of Planning and Public Works of the Municipality of Trieste, outlined the technical aspects of the initiative. He emphasized that the commencement of works on March 25th marks a significant milestone in the city’s urban revitalization efforts.

Bernetti highlighted the comprehensive nature of the project, detailing plans for underground infrastructure upgrades encompassing sewer systems, gas and water networks, and advanced data technology lines. Above ground, the transformation will include the construction of a modern roadway, spacious pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycling lanes, state-of-the-art lighting installations, and vibrant public green spaces.

Upon completion, the revamped Monumental Avenue will facilitate smoother vehicular traffic flow, with the existing bypass transitioning to a one-way route toward Barcola. The ambitious timeline targets a summer 2026 completion, with plans underway for additional enhancements, including the creation of a sprawling Linear Green Park, set to become one of Europe’s longest pedestrian spaces.

Trieste’s bold urban renewal initiative promises to usher in a new era of prosperity and vitality for the historic port city, solidifying its position as a beacon of innovation and progress on Italy’s Adriatic coast.
