In a nuanced portrayal of environmental progress, the 2023 report from the national environmental protection system unveils a modest upturn in air quality across the region, with ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and benzo[a]pyrene showing slight improvements.

Arpa FVG’s meticulous assessments reveal a commendable adherence to regulatory thresholds throughout most of the regional landscape, marred only by a solitary breach of the daily fine particulate matter limit in Brugnera, where 46 days surpassed the regulatory benchmark out of a permissible 35.

Notably, ozone, a seasonal scourge, witnessed a general reduction in breaches of the 120 micrograms per cubic meter threshold during 2023. However, persistent challenges persist: the three-year average of exceedances continues to hover above the 25-day target, a feat achieved at only three of the eleven monitoring stations, notably in Ugovizza, Monfalcone, and Trieste via Carpineto.

While benzo[a]pyrene metrics show signs of improvement, lingering exceedances are predominantly found along the Veneto borders and in low-ventilation alpine valleys. Tolmezzo emerges within the confines of the annual average objective value, contrasting with Brugnera, which, akin to 2022, overshoots the stipulated objective.

Conversely, the narrative shifts when addressing nitrogen dioxide, with annual average concentrations comfortably below the legal threshold of 40 micrograms per cubic meter, showcasing a comprehensive compliance across the entirety of the regional expanse.
