In a recent press conference held at the San Sabba National Monument, plans were unveiled for a comprehensive renovation project aimed at enhancing accessibility and restoring historical features. Spearheaded by Elisa Lodi, the Councillor for Real Estate Heritage Policies, alongside architects Barbara Gentilini and Linda Roncaglia from the Municipality of Trieste, and construction director Paolo Dri, the initiative marks a significant milestone in the preservation of this revered site.

The ambitious endeavor, funded by dedicated ministerial resources totaling €540,000, is set to revitalize the monument’s infrastructure, making it fully accessible to visitors, including those with disabilities. Among the key highlights of the project is the installation of a new elevator, ensuring seamless access to the conference room and reading area irrespective of the museum’s operating hours.

“This project is not only about enhancing physical accessibility but also about enriching the visitor experience and preserving the monument’s historical integrity,” remarked Councillor Lodi during the presentation.

The meticulous planning process, which adhered to guidelines from the Superintendence for Architectural and Landscape Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia, as well as local fire safety authorities, outlines a comprehensive timeline spanning several phases.

Commencing with the signing of contracts in December 2022, the project progressed through approval stages for the final and executive designs, culminating in the selection of the executing company, “Di Betta Giannino & Figli Srl,” in February 2024. Construction officially commenced on March 4, 2024, with an anticipated completion date of October 30, 2024.

The renovation agenda encompasses various facets, including the restoration of the deteriorated entrance gate and the construction of an external elevator system along Via Rio Primario. Additionally, modifications to the surrounding green spaces will ensure enhanced accessibility, with ramps and platforms catering to individuals with mobility challenges.

Furthermore, expansions to the conference room’s capacity and the establishment of dedicated spaces for relic preservation underscore the project’s commitment to facilitating scholarly pursuits and preserving the monument’s historical artifacts.

As the project unfolds, meticulous attention will be paid to minimizing disruptions to visitor access, ensuring that the monument remains accessible and engaging throughout the renovation process.

The unveiling of this ambitious renovation project signals a new chapter in the preservation and accessibility of the San Sabba National Monument, reaffirming its significance as a cultural landmark for generations to come.
