Italy has finally rolled out its much-anticipated visa program aimed at attracting highly-skilled remote workers or “digital nomads” from non-EU countries, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to bolster its digital workforce.
The comprehensive details of the visa requirements were formally announced on April 4th, a culmination of two years of planning since the decree was initially greenlit by the government in 2022.
The newly introduced digital nomad visa comes with a set of stringent criteria, underscoring the Italian government’s commitment to ensuring that only the most qualified individuals gain access to this unique opportunity. Prospective applicants must meet several prerequisites, including demonstrating a minimum income threshold, securing adequate health insurance coverage, and furnishing proof of accommodation within Italy.
To be eligible for the digital nomad visa, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
- Minimum Income Requirement: Applicants must boast an annual income that is at least three times the minimum level necessary to be exempt from participation in healthcare costs in Italy, approximated at €28,000.
- Comprehensive Health Insurance: Prospective digital nomads are mandated to procure health insurance that encompasses medical treatment and hospitalization, valid for the entire duration of their stay in Italy.
- Relevant Work Experience: A minimum of six months of prior experience in the chosen field of remote work is obligatory.
- Employment Documentation: Applicants are required to present either a work contract or a legally binding offer of employment.
- Accommodation Proof: Evidence of accommodation arrangements within Italy must be provided.
- Clean Record: No convictions within the preceding five years are permissible.
Moreover, successful visa applicants are obligated to apply for a residence permit from the local police headquarters within eight working days of their arrival in Italy. The residence permit, designated as “digital nomad – remote worker,” is initially valid for one year, with the option of renewal.
Importantly, digital nomads who secure a residence permit have the opportunity to be accompanied by immediate family members, who will also receive a visa for the same duration as the primary worker.
Once the residence permit is granted, visa recipients will be issued a codice fiscale tax identification code, following which they must apply for a partita IVA or VAT number.
For those eager to seize this opportunity, applications must be submitted at their respective local Italian consulate prior to traveling to Italy. Italy’s proactive measures in introducing this visa scheme not only position the country as an enticing destination for skilled remote workers but also underscore its commitment to fostering innovation and economic growth in the digital realm.
