Italy celebrates the Festa della Liberazione on 25 April which marks the country’s liberation from German occupation and fascist rule at the end of world war two.
A public holiday across Italy, all state schools and offices are closed on Thursday 25 April, with many Italians planning a “ponte” long weekend by taking Friday 26 April off work.
The day is marked in Trieste with a ceremony at the Risiera San Saba at 11 am with free entrance. If you’d like to participate, please send email to: risierasansabba@comune.trieste.it.
This solemn event is followed at 12.15 by the administration laying a wreath at the symbolic places of resistance in Trieste: Parco della Rimembranza and Poligono di Villa Opicina.
Italy’s state-run museums and archaeological sites will be open to the public for free on 25 April, the country’s culture minister announced last week. This includes Trieste’s Miramare Castle.
