In a symbolic display of cross-border cooperation, a historic train route connecting the city of Trieste to the Croatian port city of Rijeka has been revitalized, marking a significant milestone in regional transportation development.
Each morning, precisely at 7:50 AM, a train embarks from the Villa Opicina train station in Trieste, bound for Rijeka. The inaugural journey witnessed the presence of dignitaries and representatives from Italian, Slovenian, and Croatian institutions, underlining the collaborative spirit driving this endeavor.
The route, once bustling with activity until its decline in the early 1970s, has been reignited through the efforts of the Central European Initiative (CEI) and a fruitful partnership between Slovenian and Croatian railways. Following a prolonged hiatus, this historic pathway has now been resurrected, breathing new life into regional connectivity.
Travelers aboard the train can expect a two-hour journey, punctuated by seven distinct stops, including notable locales like Divača and Opatija. Departing Rijeka at 18:25, the return trip concludes in Trieste at 20:40. While the allure of speed may favor automobile travel, the train offers an unparalleled sense of community and connection.
With over 250 passengers on board, the train accommodates approximately ten spaces for bicycles and strollers, catering to diverse travel needs. Moreover, complimentary Wi-Fi, courtesy of the Slovenian railway company, ensures passengers stay connected throughout the voyage.
Tickets, priced at 8 euros, extend discounted rates of 4 euros for seniors over 65 and children under 12, with complimentary access granted to children under 6. Convenience reigns supreme as tickets can be conveniently purchased onboard.
Ensuring seamless access to the train, the Region provides a bus service from downtown Trieste to Villa Opicina, underscoring a commitment to accessible transportation infrastructure. Notably, Infrastructure Councilor Amirante has voiced the Region’s intent to sustain this initiative for two years, reflecting anticipation surrounding Gorizia – Nova Gorica’s designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2025.
In an era where connectivity transcends borders, the revitalization of the Trieste-Rijeka train route stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, fostering unity among neighboring communities and reinvigorating historical ties.
