In a collaborative effort between the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region’s Department of Infrastructure, plans are in motion to revitalize the iconic Ausonia seaside resort in Trieste. The ambitious restoration project aims to breathe new life into the historic establishment, which has been marred by closure since 2019 following a devastating storm surge.
With a keen eye on preserving the cultural heritage of the region, authorities have embarked on a meticulous evaluation of the site’s condition and the necessary interventions. The initial phase, estimated at approximately 100,000 euros, will encompass a comprehensive feasibility study and various components addressing structural enhancements, including the iconic Olympic swimming pool, walkways along the seaside and customs sides, as well as the refurbishment of spectator stands and floor reinforcement.
Crucially, the restoration endeavor will involve close collaboration with the Superintendence of archaeology, fine arts, and landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia, ensuring that the project aligns with stringent preservation standards. However, the path to fruition hinges on securing the requisite funding, projected at a staggering 2 million euros, from ministerial institutions tasked with safeguarding and promoting cultural assets.
The Ausonia seaside resort, currently under the stewardship of the Ausonia Cooperative Social Onlus Consortium and safeguarded by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, has garnered widespread support from local associations and citizens. Petitions advocating for its restoration, notably directed at the Ministry of Culture, underscore the significance of this historical gem to the community.
Notably, previous attempts to secure funding from the Ministry were stymied by procedural hurdles, highlighting the importance of establishing robust design and approval mechanisms. Now, with renewed determination and a clear path forward, stakeholders are poised to embark on a transformative journey to revive the Ausonia seaside resort, breathing new vitality into Trieste’s cultural landscape.
