Embark on a journey through time aboard vintage carriages traversing the picturesque landscapes of Friuli Venezia Giulia, where history and charm converge. With the May dates announced, enthusiasts of slow tourism and cultural discovery eagerly anticipate another season of immersive experiences amidst the region’s hidden gems.

Following the resounding success of last year’s expeditions and the swift sell-out of April’s inaugural runs, the 2024 program promises 24 more enchanting journeys from May 5 to December 15. Passengers will revel in the nostalgia of the 1930s “Centoporte” carriages, replete with wooden salons and window curtains, lovingly preserved and pulled by a variety of locomotives, from steam to electric to diesel.

From UNESCO heritage sites to the quaint “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy,” from coastal hamlets to historical reenactments, the itineraries promise an array of cultural experiences. Guided tours, culinary festivals, and even sporting events await travelers seeking a deeper connection with the region’s heritage and traditions.

This initiative, a collaboration between the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Fondazione FS, and PromoTurismoFVG, not only aims to showcase the region’s treasures but also advocates for sustainable tourism. With a comprehensive and quality offering, including ground activities such as guided tours and nature excursions, and the option to bring bicycles along, travelers are encouraged to embrace a slower pace of exploration, reducing their environmental footprint while enriching their cultural understanding.

May’s schedule is brimming with enticing excursions, each offering a unique glimpse into Friuli Venezia Giulia’s diverse tapestry. The Belle Epoque Train kicks off the month, whisking passengers from Sacile to Cormons and Gorizia, immersing them in the elegance of a bygone era. Guided tours of Gorizia’s historic center and tastings at Cormons wineries are among the highlights of this journey.

On May 12, the UNESCO Cities Train departs from Trieste, bound for Palmanova and Cividale del Friuli, delving into the rich history and architectural marvels of these storied locales. Free guided tours await passengers, promising insights into the region’s past and present.

As spring blooms, the Orchid Train embarks on May 19, transporting travelers to Osoppo for the Orchid Festival, a celebration of the region’s natural beauty. Meanwhile, the Gardens Train sets off from Trieste on May 26, inviting passengers to discover the bountiful vineyards and floral landscapes of Sacile during the “Open Wineries” event.

Tickets for these enchanting journeys are available through Trenitalia channels, with prices starting at €5 for adults and special rates for children. While seat reservations are not possible, travelers are assured of a memorable experience aboard these meticulously restored historic trains, complete with informative commentary and personalized service from PromoTurismoFVG staff.

Whether indulging in a leisurely exploration of charming villages or savoring the flavors of local cuisine, passengers are encouraged to dress appropriately for the climate and embrace the rustic allure of these vintage carriages. With each journey promising a blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty, the historic trains of Friuli Venezia Giulia offer an unparalleled travel experience for discerning adventurers.
