In a groundbreaking move to address the pervasive issue of gender-based violence, the Area Science Park in Trieste has launched a pioneering initiative. Collaborating with the Anti-Violence Center of Trieste, known as GOAP, the institution aims to combat and prevent all forms of violence against women.
The statistics provided by GOAP are stark and indicative of the systemic nature of the problem. Since 1999, over 5,500 women have reached out to the center for support, highlighting the urgent need for action. Additionally, refuge houses have sheltered 133 women and 123 minors, with hundreds more seeking emergency accommodation and hotel stays due to the threat of violence.
Maria Ferrara, Vice President of GOAP, underscored the importance of awareness and support services in empowering victims to seek help. Ferrara emphasized that gender-based violence transcends societal boundaries, impacting women from all walks of life.
The initiative’s focal point is the establishment of an anti-violence desk at the Area Science Park campuses in Padriciano and Basovizza. Scheduled to open every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, starting May 2024, the desk will provide a safe space for employees to access information and support.
Anna Sirica, the director of the Area Science Park, expressed her commitment to creating a workplace culture that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all employees. By opening the anti-violence desk, Sirica hopes to break down the barriers that prevent victims from seeking assistance and foster a culture of empowerment and support.
The move aligns with broader efforts to address gender-based violence on a societal level, recognizing the need for multifaceted approaches to combat this pervasive issue. As the first initiative of its kind launched by a research institution in Italy, it represents a significant step forward in the fight against gender-based violence.
The initiative’s impact extends beyond the workplace, serving as a beacon of hope for communities grappling with the devastating effects of violence against women. By providing resources and support, the Area Science Park aims to create a more equitable, inclusive, and safer society for all.
