In a significant development for Trieste’s Pineta di Barcola, recently restored play areas and green spaces were unveiled during a morning press conference attended by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, CRTrieste Foundation President Massimo Paniccia, and Territorial Policy Councilor Michele Babuder. This event marked a pivotal moment in the city’s recovery from the damage inflicted by last year’s storms.

Prompted by the exceptional storms that struck the region on dates ranging from October 28th to November 5th, 2023, causing significant damage to the coastline and greenery, the municipal administration sought assistance from the CRTrieste Foundation to aid in the restoration efforts. Responding swiftly, the Foundation’s Board of Directors approved a comprehensive plan, collaborating closely with municipal authorities to expedite the process.

Initial efforts, supported financially by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and Civil Protection, focused on tasks such as removing sea-displaced flora and replacing damaged pavements. Subsequent phases saw selected firms commissioned by the CRTrieste Foundation dismantle damaged structures and install new anti-trauma pavements and play equipment. Five play areas underwent rejuvenation, with two being restored and three completely renovated.

Concurrently, green spaces received attention, with new flowerbeds planted and irrigation systems restored. The project, which commenced on February 2, 2024, and concluded on May 10, 2024, required a total expenditure of Euro 221,684.00.

In statements, Mayor Dipiazza expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort, while CRTrieste Foundation President Paniccia underscored the organization’s commitment to community welfare. The restored Pineta di Barcola stands as a symbol of resilience and community spirit, embodying the collective determination to overcome adversity and rebuild for the benefit of all residents.
