Trieste unveiled plans for the second edition of “Re Carnival – Carnivals without Borders,” set to unfold on Saturday, May 18. Under the auspices of the Municipality of Trieste, the event promises a vibrant fusion of Italian and international carnival traditions.
A press conference on Monday, May 13, provided a glimpse into the festivities to come, showcasing a lineup of 24 elaborate floats representing carnivals from across Italy, alongside masked groups and performers from neighboring Slovenia and Croatia.
In commemoration of the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing, the New Silk Roads Institute of Trieste will spotlight Chinese heritage with traditional costumes and martial arts demonstrations.
Adding an international flair, the French delegation from Nice, known as Planet Vapeur, will present their aquatic-themed parade, “Aquatica,” featuring larger-than-life marine creatures and colorful performances.
The parade, boasting over 1000 participants, will kick off at 4:30 p.m. from Campo Marzio, tracing a scenic route along the waterfront to Piazza Tommaseo. Spectators can enjoy the spectacle from the Scala Reale grandstand, while musical accompaniment will be provided by the Vecia Trieste Band and the Majorettes Magic Stars of Jesolo.
The festivities will culminate with a captivating finale at 8:30 p.m. in Piazza Unità d’Italia, featuring the production “Ad Astra,” blending water effects, aerial acrobatics, and fiery performances.
Organized by Wavents, a prominent Venetian event management company, Re Carnival promises to be a celebration of cultural diversity and community spirit. In the event of adverse weather conditions, the festivities will be rescheduled for Sunday, May 19.
