The Burlo Garofolo Hospital in Trieste, Italy, has introduced a new educational space within its premises – the “Aula Natura” (Nature Classroom). Developed through a collaboration between the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Procter & Gamble, this initiative aims to provide a green learning environment for young patients.
The Aula Natura concept, now in its 47th installment across Italy, seeks to create open-air educational spaces where children can engage with nature and learn about environmental conservation. The Trieste installation, reputedly the largest, covers approximately 500 square meters and features pathways winding through varied ecosystems.
The classroom design incorporates elements such as artificial ponds, butterfly gardens, and aromatic herb gardens to offer a sensory-rich experience. Bat boxes, insect hotels, and bird feeders are integrated to promote biodiversity within the space.
Hospital officials, including Stefano Dorbolò, the hospital’s director general, and Alessia Rosolen, regional councilor for education and research, have underscored the importance of initiatives like the Aula Natura in supporting the educational needs of hospitalized children.
In addition to serving as an educational resource, the hospital’s “School in Hospital” program ensures that young patients receive continued access to learning opportunities during their stay. Collaborating with local schools and medical teams, educators tailor lesson plans to accommodate the unique circumstances of each student.
As the Aula Natura opens its doors, it represents a commitment to providing holistic care for young patients, integrating education and nature within the hospital environment.
