In the bustling streets of Trieste’s city center, a vibrant spectacle unfolded last Saturday afternoon, marking the second edition of the eagerly awaited “Re Carnival – Carnivals without Borders” event. Hosted by the Municipality of Trieste, this celebration transcended geographical confines, welcoming delegations and ornate floats from both domestic and international carnivals, transforming the city into a kaleidoscope of colors and cultures.

A procession of 24 allegorical floats, hailing from renowned carnivals such as Muggia, Opicina, and Jesolo, paraded along the scenic Rive, captivating onlookers with their elaborate designs and spirited performances. Joining this eclectic ensemble were masked groups from as far as Romans d’Isonzo and Staranzano, alongside traditional representatives from Slovenia and Croatia, including the esteemed Koranti and Campanari di Halubje.

Commemorating the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing, the event embraced diverse cultural expressions, featuring the enchanting pageantry of the New Silk Roads Institute of Trieste, adorned in the resplendent attire of 56 Chinese ethnicities and dynastic regalia. Meanwhile, the Weisong School of Pordenone enthralled audiences with the mesmerizing Lion Dance and Dragon Dance, complemented by captivating martial arts displays.

Amidst the revelry, the Vecia Trieste Band and the Majorettes Magic Stars of Jesolo provided lively accompaniment, infusing the atmosphere with infectious energy and rhythm. Yet, it was the inclusion of the French delegation, Planet Vapeur from Nice, that truly stole the show. Renowned for their innovative parade “Aquatica,” the troupe transported spectators on an aquatic odyssey, featuring larger-than-life marine creatures, stilt-walking performers adorned in vibrant attire, and whimsical scenic contraptions.

The grand procession, boasting over 1,000 participants, commenced from Campo Marzio, meandering along the picturesque banks of Trieste before culminating at Piazza Tommaseo. Spectators, perched upon the Scala Reale, reveled in the spectacle from a specially erected stand, offering unrestricted views of the festivities.

As dusk descended upon the city, the spectacle crescendoed into a grand finale at Piazza Unità d’Italia, with the spellbinding performance “Ad Astra.” Amidst a symphony of water effects, pyrotechnics, and aerial acrobatics, attendees were transported on a celestial voyage, bridging the realms of sea and stars.

Organized by Wavents, a Venetian event management company renowned for its grand spectacles, the “Re Carnival” extravaganza underscored Trieste’s status as a cultural crossroads, uniting diverse communities in a celebration of unity, creativity, and boundless imagination.
