In a move that underscores its commitment to sustainability and regional economic growth, Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has inaugurated the €200 million transformation of its Duino plant into a high-quality recycled cardboard production facility. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on May 23, marked a significant milestone in the company’s ambitious investment program.

Acquired by Mondi in January 2023, the Duino paper mill, strategically located near Trieste on the Adriatic coast, is set to become a cornerstone of the company’s efforts to innovate and deliver sustainable packaging solutions. The facility, which previously housed machinery for coated paper production, is undergoing a comprehensive conversion to produce recycled cardboard.

The transformation is not just a technical upgrade but a pivotal shift towards addressing global environmental challenges, notably the reduction of plastic waste. The recycled cardboard produced at Duino will be utilized to manufacture corrugated cardboard boxes and innovative packaging solutions catering to a diverse array of industries, including food and beverage, consumer goods, and heavy industrial products.

Markus Gärtner, CEO of Mondi Corrugated Packaging, highlighted the strategic benefits of the location, stating, “This site allows us to supply corrugated cardboard solutions efficiently across Central Europe, the Mediterranean area, and the local Italian market.” He emphasized the company’s commitment to local sourcing, noting that it not only benefits the regional economy but also minimizes environmental impact through reduced transport distances. “This strengthens the resilience of our supply chain and ultimately benefits our customers,” Gärtner added.

The ceremony, attended by local dignitaries including Igor Gabrovec, the Mayor of Duino, and Luca Antonicelli, representing the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, showcased Mondi’s dedication to fostering local partnerships and job creation. Bruno Cottone, Managing Director of Mondi Duino, elaborated on the company’s efforts to build a diverse and inclusive workforce. “We are committed to increasing the female component in our team and welcoming the next generation of talent,” Cottone said, underscoring the creation of numerous opportunities for highly skilled professionals.

The Duino plant’s conversion is part of Mondi’s broader strategy to lead in sustainable packaging solutions. The investment reflects the company’s robust approach to innovation, sustainability, and community engagement. As the global demand for sustainable packaging grows, Mondi’s Duino facility is poised to play a critical role in meeting this demand while supporting the regional economy and environment.
