This Sunday, May 26, marks the much-anticipated return of the Trieste Port Open Day, now in its sixth edition. This event, promoted by the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea along with various trade associations, operators, and the port community, has generated substantial interest, with all 400 available spots filling up within two days of registration opening on May 12.
The Open Day, which has resumed after a pandemic-induced hiatus, offers the public a rare opportunity to explore the port’s bustling operations. This year’s event is notable for several reasons, chief among them the unveiling of new areas and facilities that are typically off-limits to the general public.
The tour will commence at the historic Torre del Lloyd, the administrative hub for the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone. Here, participants will receive a comprehensive overview from Port Authority President Zeno D’Agostino and Secretary-General Vittorio Torbianelli.
Following this introduction, attendees will board buses for a guided tour of the port’s extensive facilities. A highlight of this year’s itinerary is the newly accessible former Servola Steelworks shipyard area, which is being transformed into a new rail terminal and future Pier VIII. Adjacent to this site is the operational Logistics Platform terminal managed by HHLA PLT Italy, another first-time feature of the tour.
The Open Day will also include stops at several key terminals within the Porto Nuovo area. These include the Pier VII Container Terminal operated by Trieste Marine Terminal, the Silocaf facility run by Pacorini, and the Pier V Ro-Ro Terminal managed by Samer Seaports & Terminals. The tour will conclude at the expansive Campo Marzio rail yard.
Throughout the day, visitors will gain insight into the complex logistics of loading and unloading ships and ferries, the variety of goods handled, and the intricacies of container contents. The port’s significant railway infrastructure, essential to its operations, will also be on display. Trieste stands out as Italy’s leading rail port, handling approximately 12,000 trains annually.
An integral part of the Open Day experience will be interactions with the port’s workforce. Operators will be on hand to share detailed accounts of their daily roles and responsibilities, providing an insider’s view of the port’s dynamic environment.
With over 400 participants expected, distributed across eight time slots from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Trieste Port Open Day promises a thorough and engaging exploration of one of Italy’s most vital maritime hubs.
