Nestled in the heart of Trieste, the International School of Trieste is marking a significant milestone: six decades of shaping young minds. To commemorate this anniversary, we sat down with Carrie Pierson, the school’s director, to reflect on its history and impact.
“Sixty years is a long time to sum up in one question,” Pierson begins, her pride evident. The school’s inception was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the International Center for Theoretical Physics and the former American Consulate. The Area Science Park later joined as an associate, bolstering the institution’s resources and reputation.
Over the years, the school has seen significant transformations. “We moved to our current campus, purchased it, and made substantial improvements,” Pierson notes. These enhancements have supported the school’s expansion from early childhood education to a full-fledged K-12 institution. “In the last 20 years, we’ve developed the high school program and have had our graduates become integral parts of our community.”
The International School of Trieste prides itself on its holistic approach to education, aiming to prepare students for a globalized world. “Our high school graduates go on to study around the world,” Pierson says. “They enter diverse fields, from the sciences and mathematics to the humanities and politics. We see our alumni securing fascinating opportunities, and they often return to share their successes with us.”
Pierson highlights the school’s commitment to providing a unique educational environment. “For our younger students, it’s a chance to learn on a beautiful campus, using innovative and engaging teaching methods.” This forward-thinking approach ensures that students are not only well-prepared academically but are also encouraged to think critically and creatively about their future.
As the International School of Trieste looks forward to its next chapter, Pierson is optimistic. “We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and excited for what’s to come. Our mission remains to offer excellent education and to provide our students with the opportunities to succeed in whatever paths they choose.”
